TOLD PRIVACY POLICY Last updated: August 23, 2026 Told ("we," "us," or "the app") narrates short audio stories about the places you drive through. This policy explains what the app collects, how it is used, and the choices you have. We aim to collect as little as possible and to be plain about it. INFORMATION WE COLLECT - Location, including in the background. Told uses your device location -- including while the app runs in the background as you drive, when your phone is locked, or when you are using other apps -- to determine where you are and tell stories about the places around you. Your coordinates are sent to our service to select and write the story for that spot. Location is used to create your stories in the moment; it is not used to advertise to you or to build a profile of you over time. - An anonymous device identifier. The app creates a random id stored on your device so it can avoid repeating stories you have already heard and vary the topics across your drive. It is not tied to your name, email, or app store account, and it is removed if you delete the app. - Basic app and diagnostic data. Limited technical information (such as app errors and anonymous usage counts) may be processed to keep the app working. Told does NOT collect your name, email address, phone number, contacts, or photos, and it has no login or user account. HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION - To determine your location and generate and narrate stories about the places around you as you travel. - To avoid repeating stories and to rotate topics across your drive. - To maintain, secure, and improve the app. SERVICE PROVIDERS WE SHARE DATA WITH We use trusted third parties only to operate the app. They process data on our behalf to produce and deliver your stories: - Anthropic -- Claude AI (writes each story from the place information). - ElevenLabs -- text-to-speech (turns each story into the narrator's voice). - Railway -- secure backend hosting. - Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play) -- whichever store you installed Told from processes any subscription purchase and manages billing (see below). - RevenueCat -- helps us manage subscriptions and tells the app whether your subscription is active. It receives an anonymous purchase identifier from the store, not your name or payment details. - Public, factual sources used to ground the stories -- Wikipedia / Wikimedia, the U.S. National Weather Service (weather.gov), OpenStreetMap, and the Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org). We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for third-party advertising or cross-app tracking. SUBSCRIPTIONS AND BILLING Told offers an optional paid subscription ("Told Pro") with a free trial. If you choose to subscribe, the purchase, payment, and renewal are handled entirely by the app store you installed Told from -- Apple through your App Store account, or Google through your Google Play account. We never see or store your credit card or payment information. We use RevenueCat to manage the subscription and to tell the app whether your subscription is currently active or inactive; RevenueCat receives only an anonymous purchase identifier, not your name, email, or store account ID. You can view, manage, or cancel your subscription any time in your device Settings under your Apple ID, or in the Google Play app under Payments and subscriptions. Prices, trial length, and terms are shown in the app before you purchase. DATA RETENTION Coordinates are used to produce your stories and are not used to track you over time. We keep only the minimal, anonymous records needed to avoid repeating stories and to keep the service running. YOUR CHOICES AND RIGHTS - Location. You can allow or deny location access -- including background access -- in your device Settings at any time. Denying it will stop Told from telling location-based stories. - Deleting your data. Because Told has no account and stores its identifier on your device, deleting the app removes that identifier. To request deletion of any anonymous records associated with your device, email us at the address below. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY Told is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will remove it. SECURITY We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to safeguard your data. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above. CONTACT Questions or requests? Email matthewbrickhaus@gmail.com. (c) 2026 Told. All rights reserved.
